FAQs About Shiatsu
What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a Japanese form of hands on therapy that bridges a traditional oriental art form with modern physiology and anatomy. The body is assessed with attention to all the systems of the body- skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, and circulatory. Through palpation, finger and thumb pressure along meridians and gentle stretching, a practitioner balances the areas of weakness "kyo" and areas of tension "jitsu" allowing the "Ki" vital energy to flow more effectively. This allows all of the systems to function better and aid in the healing process. This can often leave you feeling energized and grounded without pain or discomfort
How do I prepare for my Shiatsu treatment?
To get the most out of a treatment avoid drinking coffee and eating 1-2 hours before hand. If you need to eat, eat small amounts of food as to not bloat the belly. Come with comfortable clothing - yoga or jogging pants and a long sleeve shirt and warm socks.
How is a Shiatsu done?
Shiatsu is often done on a futon mat or a low massage table with the client fully clothed, so that the practitioner can access the body in a variety of position and apply proper pressure and technique, while providing a very grounding experience.
How can Shiatsu address your needs?
Upper/Lower Back Pain | Headaches and Neck pain | Digestive Problems | Postural Problems | Shallow Breathing |Joint Pain
Anxiety/Shallow Breathing | Depression/Fatigue | Menstrual Issues
Is Shiatsu licensed and covered?
Shiatsu therapy is regulated by the Shiatsu Therapy Association and practitioners are registered and licensed to practice. There are several plans that cover Shiatsu but the coverage is not as widespread as RMT coverage so it is up to the individual to ask their insurance provider if it is covered. Some plans are more open ended and allow clients to choose therapies. Shiatsu is usually covered under such a plan.

"I received a Shiatsu massage from Melissa after a long bout of recurring back problems that interfered with my day to day life and ability to exercise. I tried other types of massage therapy and they were helpful temporarily but after Melissa's Shiatsu massage my back pain actually disappeared! Her treatment was calming and therapeutic and I can't wait to go back!" -Shannon Wind
